The record number of Americans on food stamps gave momentum to former Republican Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich's mid-term election rallying cry that the Democrats are the “party of food stamps,” while the Republicans are the “party of paychecks.” This analogy has been used to paint Democrats as extreme liberals or socialists, especially in hotly contested politcal races. And, now, the Party of Tea has been added to the mix.
