October 24, 2011 is Food Day Around San Francisco Bay
San Francisco is joining numerous communities around California and the nation in hosting events on October 24 for Food Day, a national grassroots campaign sponsored by the Center for Science in the Public Interest. Food Day will bring people together from across the country on and around Monday, October 24 to participate in activities and events that encourage Americans to “eat real” and support healthy, affordable food grown in a sustainable, humane way. Modeled on Earth Day, organizers hope Food Day will inspire Americans to hold thousands of events in schools, on college campuses, in houses of worship, and even in private homes aimed at fixing America’s food system.

Details: The San Francisco Board of Supervisors and Mayor Edwin Lee are jointly proclaiming October 24th to be Food Day.
Facilitated by Supervisor David Chiu, and with Supervisor Eric Mar, Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, Johanna Partin from the office of Mayor Ed Lee, Paula Jones, director of food systems for SF Public Health, and other local leaders. A number of different organizations and communities are following suit by hosting events on and around October 24th.

The 59th annual Pacific Orchid Exposition, the largest orchid show in the United States, returns to Fort Mason Center's Festival Pavilion on March 3-6, 2011 to showcase over 150,000 orchids.
Move Over Wine and Roses. Orchid expert, Bruce Rogers, will give design tips and ideas for pairing orchids to specific wines. Rogers has spent decades running his full service orchid business, as well as providing consulting and orchid displays for parties or events. He has worked with countless private clients, such as Senator Diane Feinstein as well as popular retail establishments like Ralph Lauren Polo, Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom's to design amazing orchid centerpieces and décor.
The Pacific Orchid Exposition is hosted by the non-profit San Francisco Orchid Society (SFOS), and the event serves as the organization's major fundraiser. Proceeds from the Gala Benefit Preview night on Thursday, March 3 from 6:30 - 10:00 pm, will go to assisting other non-profit horticultural organizations such as the Conservatory of Flowers and the Helen Crocker Russell Library of Horticulture.
