A recent study published by researchers at the National Cancer Institute estimates that the cost of cancer in the U.S. may reach $207 billion by 2020. Is this really necessary?
Jay Kordich (aka "the Father of Juicing") says no! At the young age of 26, Jay was diagnosed with bladder cancer. He traveled from Southern Californ to New York City to visit Dr. Max Gerson who was successfully treating cancer patients using organic foods, juicing, coffee enemas, natural supplements and detoxification to activate the body’s ability to heal itself since the 1920's. After recovering from his bladder cancer and healthier than ever, Jay became a lifelong advocate of this healthy lifestyle. His book, "The Power of Juicing" (published in 1992), became #1 on the New York Times Bestseller List.
Now eighty-eight years young and with more energy than many in their 20's, Jay continues to "walk the talk" and advocate that drinking freshly juiced vegetables and fruits is not only the best way to maintain your health, but also to repair damage that has been done to your body.
Listen to Jay Kordich talk with Gina Snow about his mission in life to educate the public about the many health benefits of juicing and his new book, "Live Foods Live Bodies," co-authored with his wife Linda. in the Radio Gallery. Learn more at www.jaykordich.com.
It is estimated that three million Americans have Celiac Disease which is an autoimmune disorder that causes damage to the small intestine leading to malabsorption of nutrients. There is no "magic pill" for celiac sufferers and following a gluten-free diet is necessary.
After Elana Amsterdam and her three year old son were both diagnosed with Celiac Disease, she was inspired to develop gluten-free recipes using almond flour for everyday meals. Her favorite recipes have resulted in The Gluten-Free Almond Flour Cookbook. The flavorful and easy-to-make recipes can also benefit those with diabetes, high cholesterol, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and enjoyed by everyone with or without dietary restrictions.

As we've often heard, "Necessity is the Mother of invention." When Dwayne Ratleff, owner and sole employee of a San Francisco house cleaning service, turned 50, he decided to clean up his own act -- what he eats, that is. He looked for a resource to help him decipher the obscure ingredients listed on processed foods and nutrition labels, but found there was no single easily accessible source. Dwayne set out to research the "alphabet soup" of ingredients on packaged foods and through his own due diligence, ended up creating a searchable database of over 1,500 food products and additives.
Being a resourceful entrepreneur and wanting to share what he learned with the world, Dwayne invested $5K and hired a "techie" to create code to turn his research into an iPhone app. "Don't Eat That" was launched in December 2009 and in short order, Dwayne's "invention" was in the top 1% of all iPhone apps sold. He made back his investment in only one week.
Don't Eat That is available for download at Apple's iTunes store online for $1.99. Af ter the app is downloaded, the data is stored on your iPhone and is accessible at your fingertips as you stroll down your grocery store aisle. No internet connection is needed.
According to Dwayne, "What good is labeling if you can't understand it?"
Don't Eat That is a translator that helps consumers decipher the language of food additives, and provides food product facts and definitions arranged in ABC order. Dwayne includes safety standards and research not only from the United States, but also from the European Union (EU) food product identification system. What the US permits as a food additive may be banned in other countries. This can be an extremely helpful tool for international travelers concerned about what they eat while abroad.
Dwayne wants to empower consumers to make the best choice for themselves.
"Err in your favor," Dwayne advises. "If you do not feel comfortable with the science backing the safety of an additive, avoid it, especially if there are alternative sources."
He is especially concerned about mothers and pregnant women who have a greater need to make informed decisions about the ingredients in foods they buy for themselves or their children.
With this in mind, he has also arranged the data in easy to use categories such as: carcinogenic or bad for kids, among others. An example is honey. It is not a well-known fact that honey can cause "infant botulism” and can be fatal for babies under 12 months of age due to a bacteria that can produce a toxin within their bodies.
Information and scientific facts used to create Don't Eat That have been aggregated from various sources including: the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA), Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ), Codex Alimetarius, the American Cancer Society, the International Agency For Research On Cancer (IARC), the World Health Organization (WHO), the Center for Science in the Public Interest, and web sites for specific allergies or diseases such as Celiac.com.

An ancient crop that dates back to 6,000 B.C., flax is enjoying a renaissance – and for good reason. One of the richest sources of Omega-3 fatty acids, flax was named as one of the top 8 Super Foods in 2008.
With its United States market value swelling from approximately $100 Million to more than $2 Billion in four years, Omega-3 enriched foods make up the strongest sector of the functional foods market with room for significant growth.
Located in the heart of America’s flax producing country in North Dakota is FLAXUSA, Inc., a fifth generation family owned business. Co-owners, Stephanie & John Stober reside on their farm and grow some of the finest flax in the world. They have been educating consumers about flax seed and its many health benefits since 1999. FLAX USA's trademarked Real Cold Milled ™ process keeps the flax nutrients intact and enables the milled flax to be shelf stable for 22 months. A nutritionally complex food, analysis of Flax Seed reveals it is not only rich in Omega-3's (which have been found to burn nearly three times faster than animal fats), but is also high in both soluble and insoluble fiber, protein, B vitamins, magnesium, manganese and other vitamins and minerals that help to reduce cholesterol, fight cancer and control blood glucose levels
Flax Seed is also rich in Lignans (specifically from hulls of flax seeds), otherwise known as secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG). Considered a phytoestrogen or plant estrogen, the positive effects of flax lignans on the immune system is well-documented. New research has found a high intake of plant lignans may also reduce the risk of breast and prostate cancers and provide relief from the symptoms of menopause.

Dr. David Donatelle, Medical Director of the American Anti-Aging Society (AAASI), discussed the mission of AAASI and GHR15, a natural growth hormone releaser, that helps slow the aging process by stimulating the anterior pituitary gland to release your body’s own growth hormones. Research has shown that the decline of human growth hormone (HGH) as we age is directly associated with many of the "symptoms" of aging such as loss of hair texture and color, muscle mass, skin elasticity, etc. Using orthomolecular science principles which are based on restoring the body's imbalances, Dr. Donatelle tested GHR 15 in clinical studies and found that this natural supplement helps to postpone and in some cases reverse the aging process by triggering the release of your own HGH.
