What is fruitcake?
Fruitcake (or fruit cake) is a cake made with chopped candied fruit and/or dried fruit, nuts and spices, and optionally soaked in spirits. In the United Kingdom certain rich versions may be iced and decorated. Fruitcakes are often served in the celebration of weddings and Christmas.
National Fruitcake Day is celebrated shortly after Christmas on December 27. It's your chance to share the joy of making and sharing the heavy cake that is often shared with friends and family during the holiday season. Since most people do not actually eat fruitcake over Christmas, the cake can be saved for this special day instead! Read on to learn how to celebrate National Fruitcake Day.
Things You'll Need:
- Fruitcake leftover from Thanksgiving and Christmas
- Holiday drinks to host a party
Invite friends and neighbors for a post-Christmas celebration. This is your chance to get everyone together again for another feast.
Encourage guests to bring a fruitcake. This will be part of your holiday fruitcake exchange, and the cakes can also be served during the event.
Feature the fruitcake as the main part of the menu. You may have other cakes, sweets, cookies, and pastries available but the centerpiece will need to be the fruitcake.
Serve the fruitcake. Everyone can enjoy a toast and celebrate by eating at least two slices of fruitcake. It's lovely served with butter or cream cheese.
Offer warm holiday drinks as part of the celebration. Hot chocolate, tea, cider, and spiced coffee are great accompaniments to fruitcake.
